Test Drive Meme #001

KHU IODUAN; TEST DRIVE MEME #001

I. THE VERDANT SENTRY - Attention, New Recruits!
It's clear that all of the city's law enforcement is handled by the various branches of the Sentry: from Mounted Division handling street patrol, to the Aerial Corps provided airborne support for tactical and rescue operations, to the Nautical Branch undertaking regular sea patrols as the first line of defense along the archipelago's borders. But everyone interested in joining up has to go through their basic training program, and that starts today with a general skills assessment. There's quite a mix of attendees today, spread across nearly every race represented in Aifaran and including other Dreamfolk, but whatever the recruiter is saying is getting lost in the two chatty Igheeri who seem to think they're too good to listen to the standard welcome speech... time to interrupt by signaling the person in charge? Take care of it yourself? Gripe about it to the person in line beside you?

II. KIRIN RODEO - Place Your Bets!
At the end of every month, the Mounted Division of the Sentry holds their skills competition. When they're not on the field, their steeds are often the subject of much admiration from children and more than a few adults. Astride many breeds of kirin, some lithe and fleet, some stockier and stronger, these off-duty officers demonstrate their control and bond over the notoriously strong-willed and intelligent creatures with complicated maneuvers. There's a surprisingly in-depth system for betting on one's favourite to win the various matches, and just about everyone's willing to explain the odds to newcomers. There's only one rule: all proceeds go to funding of the city's charities. (Bragging rights on winning are still yours to keep.) Two bells ring loudly over the crowd - last call for wagers!

III. WE HAVE REGULATIONS ABOUT THIS - Munga on the Loose!
Munga are ill-tempered, rat-sized spiky lizards with a gift for camouflage, and whose venom in their spines and teeth is also highly hallucinogenic. And... they're on the loose. Fortunately, keeping them is highly regulated, and pretty much everyone in Aifaran knows about them, but loose Munga are uncommon enough that the reaction is more likely to be startled flailing at a hint of spines and skittering. Today someone's exotic pet has slipped out of their hands, and it's trailing a harness and lead as it zigzags away, prickling and hissing and going for the ankles. It's given a wide berth, except by those who don't notice until it's too late or those too preoccupied by something else. Hopefully the proper authorities have been notified to catch and return the creature, but maybe someone helpful can keep it from getting too far away?

IV. A SURPRISE WINDFALL - Officer, This Isn't Mine...
There was a loud thud as someone tosses a heavy bag from the window of a dilapidated building. Five seconds later there’s smoke pouring out the windows and your holding what seems to be someone else’s luggage. Opening it, you find carefully wrapped bricks of some very illegal drugs, and someone down the side alley is pointing at you and yelling. A mounted Sentry officer is giving you a rather peculiar look as well while he calls in the fire brigade. And among the people fleeing the building, there are five Kin’nal looking at you, wide-eyed, as it suddenly dawns on them that they messed up. Take your new prize and split before reinforcements arrive? Try to explain the mistake? Take note that the building is still on fire?

V. INTO THE UNKNOWN - Watch Your Back Out There
The sea patrol discovered the new irregularity a few days ago, reporting that it looks like a series of tall and jagged stone towers rising up from the ocean. It's incomplete as these planar-shunted locations often are, as if something massive had taken a bite of some mysterious city and then spat it whole into the seas of Konryu. Having been chosen as part of the exploration team, you've been working your way through the complicated labyrinth of stone tunnels and dead ends, searching for what the Opara engineers had enthusiastically described as a potential new power source. "Trace the green glowing power lines," was their (sort of helpful) instruction. However the lean, dark and toothy thing you've just glimpsed should probably be a more pressing concern... warn others? Take it on yourself? Pray it hasn't spotted you?

VI. WILDCARD - Because You're Not The Boss Of Me
Anything else that doesn't fit the above prompts is welcome, just keep it within the game setting please!

[ Hibiki chuckles. ] Wait and see.

Well, nothing, but....

darkwingsofkilvas: (C; yes very interesting)

[personal profile] darkwingsofkilvas 2018-01-07 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, that's right. I'm Naesala. It's a pleasure to meet you."

The longer their conversation went on, the more Naesala was starting to realize that she might actually be real. Their talk was just too coherent for what he'd expect from a hallucination. That was... rather embarrassing, but he was at least more reassured that he hadn't somehow gotten the drugs spilled on himself. Probably hadn't, at least.

"So tell me, Arietti... do the contents of this bag belong to you? I can't imagine it'd be very safe for you to be in there with such a substance."
meds4sale: (Absent minded)

[personal profile] meds4sale 2018-01-07 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah."

He was quiet as he searched the crowd for any sign of someone searching for the angry lizard, all the while carefully stepping around it every time it made a lunge for his feet.

"One might assume... that people would prefer a less aggressive pet."
justborrowingit: (could-be-better)

[personal profile] justborrowingit 2018-01-07 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Such a substance?" She looked back in the direction of the bag. "What are these blocks, exactly?"

She might have assumed some kind of flour maybe.
theinfamous1412: (Oh fine. Don't listen to me)

[personal profile] theinfamous1412 2018-01-07 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I've been practicing since I was little.

[ He can definitely hear sirens and this really isn't something he needs to deal with. Damn. ]

I might be a little out of time.

[ He's going to regret this. He scoops up the bag and slings it over his shoulder. ]
perfectenn: (Better beware)

[personal profile] perfectenn 2018-01-07 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
At least the instructors at the orientation weren't lying about the toxin effects. The city could have prepared them more (and done an effective job managing responsible pet ownership), but with all the Dreamfolk coming in, Tenn respects their hands are full.

Which leaves him to deal with the aftermath. Joy.

Unfortunately for brave Arietti and her splendid mount, she's up against a professional, and those feet are annoyingly fast and dodgy. (Try to find a dancer who can do better - he dares you.) Although it takes all his effort not to step on them... the lizard is someone's pet, after all. He doesn't know what that means in this place, but they're probably looking for its’ safe return. ... Still, the girl is a priority.

Tenn breaks into a run to clear enough distance, buy enough time, to unwind the scarf from around his neck. (Ugh, he liked this one too...) And then turning to meet his charging foe, throws the thick woolen knit onto them.

Then the defense rests.

[She folds her arms, nodding to herself. Then pauses. Eyebrow raising in slight question.]

...or would it be the prosecution? In all honesty, I've only ever played the role of witness until now, so I'm not really sure which side I'm arguing on.

But it's definitely the right one.
iseeall: (excuse me?)

He wasn't a very good liar, and he was pretty sure this guy knew it; if he was half the criminal Leo thought he was, anyway. At least the birdman wasn't a volatile, violent type, but Leo wasn't sure that made anything better or not.

He was also going to have to try a lot harder to intimidate the small man. "Don't think you can bribe me with dirty money-I'm not that stupid, and I'm doing just fine on my own! You're the one who needs a morals check."
darkwingsofkilvas: (C; so interesting I'm falling asleep)

[personal profile] darkwingsofkilvas 2018-01-07 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
That was quite the loaded question, wasn't it? Naesala was hardly eager to let on what exactly it was that he was carrying. Not to mention that Arietti seemed young, though it was quite hard to tell her age when she was so small in the first place.

"Ah... I think it's a kind of medication. It did just fall into my lap, so to speak." See, that was true in a sense. It was always easier to slide a lie past when it was at least partially true. "I don't know who owns it, so I intend on getting rid of it. I wouldn't recommend taking a taste when neither of us knows exactly what it is."
darkwingsofkilvas: (C; ugh why this)

[personal profile] darkwingsofkilvas 2018-01-07 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
Naesala just barely resisted the urge to roll his eyes. What was it with some humans that made them so uptight?

"You wound me! It might be true, but tell me, do we owe anything to these people?" He sweeps his free arm out towards the street in demonstration as he continues, "They might want us to come be quiet, productive members of their society, but none of us Dreamfolk had a say in even arriving here. If we're going to be passing through like a breeze, why bother caring? We're not citizens, and they haven't earned our loyalty. You're just getting your feathers ruffled over something that doesn't affect you in the slightest."
darkwingsofkilvas: (C; so interesting I'm falling asleep)

[personal profile] darkwingsofkilvas 2018-01-07 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
I did have the benefit of having a wise old crow for a caretaker when I was young. I learned quite a lot from him.

[But really, he doesn't agree at all. He's already planning on coming to Oldbag if any of the younger Dreamfolk give him trouble. There were such wonderful benefits to sucking up to the right people.]
divinusly: (princess posing)

[ She certainly reflects his nostalgic smile, bringing up a hand to rest upon the railing separating them from the track. ] Those animals are not native to the world from which I hail. Do you suppose that they are difficult to handle?
divinusly: (princess dominion rod)

[personal profile] divinusly 2018-01-07 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed. [ She laughs lightly as the lizard attempts to make another crawl up her arm. It seems that it's taking a liking to her, for whatever reason.

This one, at least. The others she's encountered before? Not so much. ]
Hopefully it has not mistaken me for food.
justborrowingit: (aback)

was totally spelling her name wrong before

[personal profile] justborrowingit 2018-01-07 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Arietty nodded. She'd gotten into her mother's collection of herbs once and had taken quite ill. Her father had made her swallow some horrid substance to make her vomit it up.

"We should give it to someone who can use it, then." It seemed wasteful to throw medicine away when it could be useful.
justborrowingit: (aw-what)

[personal profile] justborrowingit 2018-01-07 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
The defense..? I don't understand.

[ She has never been to a court, or seen any kind of justice system outside of her parents deciding to ground her for breaking borrower rules. ]

I wasn't trying to argue, I was trying to help.
cirquedelalune: (enjoy the show)

[personal profile] cirquedelalune 2018-01-07 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, so you're both, then. [It's hard to say anything else at an answer like that, because there'd be very little point in a wait and see if she wasn't.

As it is, if they're going to bet, they should probably go and do it now, and Asaka pushes herself up out of her seat.]
Well, I'll hope it's worth the wait and the talk, but for now I think we should get in before they close up for this round. All for a good cause, isn't it?
choseanidiot: (what's that - surprised)

[personal profile] choseanidiot 2018-01-07 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
He couldn't disguise the little twitch at the questions, staring hard at the ongoing race and finally shrugged, raising his arms to lace his hands together at the back of his head with an almost completely sincere nonchalance.

"Both, yeah." It was a little startling he'd guessed his issues with what was going on so quickly, but he knew some of the myths of Over There, and kirin were special enough there... so if he knew something like that, it wasn't so odd he'd guess. "Even Emperors are only rarely allowed on their backs."

Nevermind tall idiots like his own would be too tall for anything but carting him around while riding the wind, which he could very well use the proper kijuu for instead.
choseanidiot: (disguise - I'll have to fix this I guess)

:D

[personal profile] choseanidiot 2018-01-07 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Glancing up at the young woman who'd approached him, Rokuta shrugged and gestured with an elbow to all the free space beside him. "Not like I own the wall."

This wasn't En after all, and indeed, anything he owned even there was merely theoretical, too, so, well. He certainly didn't own anything at all here, Even less a stretch of wall he'd chosen both because it was at some distance from the race track but would still give him a place to keep an eye on things. He simply just couldn't walk away, even if that would make things a lot easier.

"You'd see better if you were closer, though." In fact, he was pretty sure she had been closer to the tracks, though her spot had already been overtaken by the shifting crown. With that thought, he shot her a sideways little frown, head cocked.
choseanidiot: (neutral - looking to the side)

[personal profile] choseanidiot 2018-01-07 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"You don't look like a stablehand," Rokuta said, snorting in something like amused challenge in that statement. She really didn't, especially not as he'd seen the people who were walking around the stables at the end of this whole area - temporary ones where the kirin were kept for the day, probably, but stables still.

And whatever else, she managed to pull a few sniggers out of him over the comment of 'they want to waste money, they can', though he was eyeing the racetrack soon after again. Because really, whoever wasn't paying attention to see - and he could see it now, too, even without having any closer knowledge of these kirin and he was paying attention to what it was trying to say, crying silently about reluctance and slight pain - that it wasn't completely healthy, shouldn't be working with the animals to let them race.
priforprince: (oooone!)

[personal profile] priforprince 2018-01-07 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Noblesse oblige.

[ She's here for the bragging rights.

Well, and to see what this place considers "entertainment". Betting on races is sufficiently sophisticated as long as the arena has box seats.

Will they let her into said box seats? If not, they will someday. ]
priforprince: (rose)

[personal profile] priforprince 2018-01-07 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Bonne chance with the disappearing act.

[ Was his show good enough to merit her presenting him with the tremendous gift of assistance....?

Hibiki supposes she'll see based on what he does next. But at least this is interesting, unlike most of what she's seen today. ]
priforprince: (hanky blush)

[personal profile] priforprince 2018-01-07 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that's foul. Hibiki squints and pulls out a purple handkerchief, holding it up to her nose. There's obviously nothing to see here, so she'd best be on her way....

Except. Was something moving?

"Who's there?" she asks, but she can feel her head starting to pound. This place smells, and whatever's in there certainly is not suitable for Celebrity Consumption. Merely being in the same environment will render her ill.

A!

The tattooed dwarf standing next to her--tall by dwarven standards, not that that tends to matter much to most folks--is indeed willing to listen. At her words, Kit Gandir cracks a lopsided little grin and makes a sound somewhere between a chuckle and a snort.

"Don't think everyone here agrees with you," he tells her wryly, stealing a discreet sideways glance at the two Igheeri talking to themselves off to one side.

v. into the unknown

It's no darkspawn, but it's definitely just as ugly.

On the bright side, its bones still break under the weight of his axes just like any other monster Kit has fought in the Deep Roads. This kind of thing is what he's built for--and frankly, it's a nice distraction from the fact that his own death in Thedas evidently wasn't the permanent kind.

"Sodding stay down--!" A grunted oath as the Legionnaire strikes his axe hard against the hissing, roaring beast's skeletal head again, sending it shrieking back a few feet. Kit advances on it, blinking some blood out of his eyes, and swings again; this time, the blade connects with the beast's jaw and knocks it loose from the joint. There's a spray of.. something... that could be blood across Kit's face, and he grimaces, but the fight appears to be over as the monster lumbers away into the dark.

He spits some of the gunk out onto the stone and wipes the rest off his forehead. Gross. "It's gone," he calls out to whomever he'd been asked to rescue, turning around. "You can, uh. Come out now." If they're hiding, that is.

vi. because you're not the boss of me - the city streets in the rain

The driving rain must have pushed the bibiru into the path of someone's cart, which is more than enough to account for the fragile thing's injured wing and forepaw. It's either a pet, or a stray, but either way it's apparent enough to Kit that walking away from it in the street isn't an option.

Not that it would have been back in Kirkwall. Anders would be proud of him.

"C'mere, salroka," he murmurs, coaxing it into the shelter of his beaten up coat. He's soaked through from the rain now, but that's no matter. "Just a little walk from here to a nice, warm bed for you--we'll get that wing looked at."
