Test Drive Meme #001

KHU IODUAN; TEST DRIVE MEME #001

I. THE VERDANT SENTRY - Attention, New Recruits!
It's clear that all of the city's law enforcement is handled by the various branches of the Sentry: from Mounted Division handling street patrol, to the Aerial Corps provided airborne support for tactical and rescue operations, to the Nautical Branch undertaking regular sea patrols as the first line of defense along the archipelago's borders. But everyone interested in joining up has to go through their basic training program, and that starts today with a general skills assessment. There's quite a mix of attendees today, spread across nearly every race represented in Aifaran and including other Dreamfolk, but whatever the recruiter is saying is getting lost in the two chatty Igheeri who seem to think they're too good to listen to the standard welcome speech... time to interrupt by signaling the person in charge? Take care of it yourself? Gripe about it to the person in line beside you?

II. KIRIN RODEO - Place Your Bets!
At the end of every month, the Mounted Division of the Sentry holds their skills competition. When they're not on the field, their steeds are often the subject of much admiration from children and more than a few adults. Astride many breeds of kirin, some lithe and fleet, some stockier and stronger, these off-duty officers demonstrate their control and bond over the notoriously strong-willed and intelligent creatures with complicated maneuvers. There's a surprisingly in-depth system for betting on one's favourite to win the various matches, and just about everyone's willing to explain the odds to newcomers. There's only one rule: all proceeds go to funding of the city's charities. (Bragging rights on winning are still yours to keep.) Two bells ring loudly over the crowd - last call for wagers!

III. WE HAVE REGULATIONS ABOUT THIS - Munga on the Loose!
Munga are ill-tempered, rat-sized spiky lizards with a gift for camouflage, and whose venom in their spines and teeth is also highly hallucinogenic. And... they're on the loose. Fortunately, keeping them is highly regulated, and pretty much everyone in Aifaran knows about them, but loose Munga are uncommon enough that the reaction is more likely to be startled flailing at a hint of spines and skittering. Today someone's exotic pet has slipped out of their hands, and it's trailing a harness and lead as it zigzags away, prickling and hissing and going for the ankles. It's given a wide berth, except by those who don't notice until it's too late or those too preoccupied by something else. Hopefully the proper authorities have been notified to catch and return the creature, but maybe someone helpful can keep it from getting too far away?

IV. A SURPRISE WINDFALL - Officer, This Isn't Mine...
There was a loud thud as someone tosses a heavy bag from the window of a dilapidated building. Five seconds later there’s smoke pouring out the windows and your holding what seems to be someone else’s luggage. Opening it, you find carefully wrapped bricks of some very illegal drugs, and someone down the side alley is pointing at you and yelling. A mounted Sentry officer is giving you a rather peculiar look as well while he calls in the fire brigade. And among the people fleeing the building, there are five Kin’nal looking at you, wide-eyed, as it suddenly dawns on them that they messed up. Take your new prize and split before reinforcements arrive? Try to explain the mistake? Take note that the building is still on fire?

V. INTO THE UNKNOWN - Watch Your Back Out There
The sea patrol discovered the new irregularity a few days ago, reporting that it looks like a series of tall and jagged stone towers rising up from the ocean. It's incomplete as these planar-shunted locations often are, as if something massive had taken a bite of some mysterious city and then spat it whole into the seas of Konryu. Having been chosen as part of the exploration team, you've been working your way through the complicated labyrinth of stone tunnels and dead ends, searching for what the Opara engineers had enthusiastically described as a potential new power source. "Trace the green glowing power lines," was their (sort of helpful) instruction. However the lean, dark and toothy thing you've just glimpsed should probably be a more pressing concern... warn others? Take it on yourself? Pray it hasn't spotted you?

VI. WILDCARD - Because You're Not The Boss Of Me
Anything else that doesn't fit the above prompts is welcome, just keep it within the game setting please!

A familiar figure stood not far off, half hidden by a red umbrella patterned with stylized moths. His face was hidden, but there was no mistaking those robes or the giant wooden pack he carried.

He was apparently staring up at a building, though it was hard to say exactly if that was the case given the aforementioned umbrella.

The Medicine Seller turned to watch the brief commotion in the streets - even motioned to help before someone got to it before him.

Someone familiar.

"Well, well."

His tone was amused as he moved to greet Kit. He didn't have much else to say, because he wasn't a very chatty fellow, but he offered the shelter of his umbrella from the rain.

"My hero," Valdis' unmistakably sarcastic tone comes from the darkness. The woman who rounds the corner is beautiful by human standards, carrying herself with confidence and poise, green eyes evaluating the man who had forced the beast into retreat. She retrieves her sword from the ground, the blade glows instantly at her touch, remaining illuminated even as she sheaths it, the red gem in the hilt pulsing softly with light.

"But I could have handled it." Given another minute or two that is.

Kit is in the process of straightening up from his crouch on the side of the street, injured bibiru tucked into the crook of one arm, when he hears the click-click-click of the wood-slatted shoes on the ground.

"Well, well."

Kit turns. He knows that voice. He'd know it anywhere.

"Hey," he says, looking up at the Medicine Seller within the shelter of the umbrella--a deceptively simple greeting given the sudden flicker of unguarded emotion in his eyes, in the warm smile he gives to his friend. Give him a few moments, and he'll have control over it again, because he's cool. They're cool.

He tries to laugh and reaches out like he might give the Medicine Seller's arm a nudge, but instead ends up just touching him through the blinding rainbow of his sleeve. "It's--ancestors, it's good to see a familiar face."

He's a tattooed dwarf sporting armour that, back in Thedas, would have marked him as a member of the Legion of the Dead. His casteless brand has faded with time, but is still present on one bruised cheekbone. And absolutely none of that matters for the first time in his life, because he's in a world where the old rules don't matter, would never matter again. How do you start over when the world around you is a blank slate, but you're not?

At least some things don't change. A warrior's pride is a delicate thing.

"Well next time, feel free to give me a little back-up," he tells Valdis, and resumes wiping the beast's viscera off of his face. He shakes his hand off to rid him of the excess, then peers up at the new arrival to the scene. "Nice sword," he adds, though his eyes linger on the glowing blade and gem somewhat apprehensively.

She glances down at the sword, "Thank you, Revelations has been my companion for many years."

Her gaze then returns to the dwarf, at least she assumes that's what he is. He reminds her of something out of The Lord of the Rings, right down the axe, though he doesn't seem nearly as hot headed as Gimli, She tips her head, finishing her evaluation.

"Well, I would have," she replies, "except my sword was across the room, and when you showed up, I didn't see a reason to scare the rest of the group any further."

"Its complicated and no longer applicable to our present situation."

Hence she didn't feel like explaining it. After watching the creature a few moments longer, she sighed heavily, clearly irate by the decision she was making.

"Come on," she said, turning away. "We're going to steal that Kirin."

There's a brief moment where his expression is a bit softer, a little less icy than he usually is. But he's otherwise unreadable as he tends to be in all things.

"You are soaking," he remarked. "Shall we go in so that you may dry off and look after your new friend?"

After all, he didn't want Kit to catch his death.

The ...thing knew it had lost the element of surprise, but these were two soft meatbags (albeit one very large meatbag but that just meant more to fill its fathomless gullet). It sprung, claws outstretched.

It was hardly even a contest - Klaus was clearly at home in a fight, even against unconventional things, and in a blink of an eye a lance formed from his blood and he flung it with the sort of precision that would make olympic javelin throwers sweat. It pierced the creature from head to toe - it was dead before it even hit the ground.

Anani mews softly, curious, green eyes blinking slowly. Valdis scoops up the cat before he can get himself into trouble though. She doesn't need him getting bitten by a rodent.

"Why are you always getting into trouble, silly cat," she rebuked him, but he didn't seem to care in the slightest, mewing loudly and trying to get out of her arms.

Having died twice already, Kit is hoping the third time's a charm.

"Yeah," he starts, "good idea," and looks down to the white, fluffy head that is currently burrowed against his chest to avoid getting more rain into its downy fur. Kit tucks his coat more snugly around the small creature, mindful of its injured wings and paws, and motions with one hand in the general direction of the Bridge... which hopefully isn't too far away. "Are you in Breakwater or Quayside? Or do you have your own digs already?"

"...and when you showed up, I didn't see any reason to scare the rest of the group any further."

"Shit," Kit chuckles, "does my face really look that bad?" Given he's just as scary as... whatever it is he just left maimed and miserable lurking in the shadows.

Which gives him a thought. Considering her sword, he looks back in the direction the beast fled. "Think we should go finish it off?" he suggests.

Valdis stares at him, a slight smile on her face. Humor. Not exactly what she expects at this moment, but she appreciates it nonetheless.

"Your face is just fine, I'd even call it handsome." She adds with a wink. At least she'd successfully avoided the need to shift, and now that Revelations is back under her control, she sees no need to do it now. "I don't think it will come back, but better to make sure, don't you think?"

"We're... what!?" Rokuta hissed viciously after a moment of baffled surprise, then abruptly hurried forward to cut her off, hands on hips and scowling up at her fiercely. "That is someone's animal, you can't go around stealing! I was gonna find someone to talk to, no need to jump to that immediately."

What was it about certain people who thought the most drastic measure was the right option to take? His hair seemingly sort of gleaming gold in the sunlight from pure incredulous outrage, he shook his head sharply.

And despite the sharp denial, he didn't seem inclined to call attention to what she'd just said and find some sort of authority to make sure she didn't do it, for whatever reason.

[ What to do with this bag of drugs. He'd He could just leave it in the ally and beat a hasty retreat or he could walk over to the police and just hand it over and hope he doesn't get blamed for having it. ]

[ Or he could just hide it for the time being. He glances up at the building again and sees a fire escape landing that he can probably put the bag on and still be back on the ground pretending to be none the wiser before any cops show up. ]

[ Too bad he can't just use Kid's grappling hook-since he's in normal civilian guise he'll have to do this the normal way. Sort of. ]

[ He jumps up to grab the fire escape ladder and starts his climb up to the landing-but climbing straight on is going to take too long so the moment he's up on the first landing he's directly below the third. All he has to do is climb up on the railing and jump up to the next one, fingers gripping the cold metal so he can pull himself up. ]

"Then I guess we're not doing anything," Valdis replied, crossing her arms and arching a delicate brow.

The fire within the boy perfectly matched his outward expression, but at least he hadn't seen fit to rat her out immediately.

"All I was planning to do was switch it to a different stall, it would take them a bit to find it. But by all means, talk to whomever you want, you might even get the kirin pulled from the race, but as I said, they can't see what is wrong, so good luck in your endeavor."

When the Fool withdraws his hand from behind the case, they are both given a brief view of the back of the case, where the wood grain has bent into an elegant curve away from the latch. It looks, for all the world, as though it was smoothed and sanded and stained that way over the course of several hours, rather than in a matter of seconds.

Then the Fool puts his back to the work of pushing as X pulls--demonstrating more spry strength than one might suspect from his slight frame--and together they're able to move the bookcase clear of the door.

In a flash, the door slams open, and nearly off of its hinges, as several Kin'nal burst out of the room, shouting in both panic and fear and pain as they scramble past towards the nearest exit.

"Is that everyone?" the Fool asks--or he starts to, at any rate, before he appears to succumb to smoke inhalation. His eyes go distant and fogged, and he slumps against the wall, catching himself against it with one grasping hand. "--oh dear." Bit of an understatement.

"That wouldn't have solved anything in the end, since if no one tells them there's a problem, they ain't gonna do anything about it," he scoffed, seemingly not particularly cowed by the revelation that she hadn't intended 'stealing' as drastically as it implied, "if you know what's wrong, why not just find someone and tell them?"

They must have people who cared for these creatures when they were sick, right? Rokuta frowned. It might take some work to get them to agree if they couldn't see what was wrong... though her emphasis on the word 'see' was really... interesting. She didn't actually mean that in normal sight, he was pretty sure, but beyond that he couldn't just yet tell what she meant with it.

The Fool makes a soft sound of distress under his breath and looks back towards the way he'd come. "Then it cannot be a dragon," he says, but in that moment he sounds far more like he is attempting to convince himself of something, rather than state a fact outright. The dragons of his world were as beautiful and terrible and brilliant and egotistical as any human mind; the idea of something as powerful as that in this world, yet without a soul or a conscience (peculiar and alien though a dragon's conscience might have been), does not sit well with him.

"There were green power cables along the stone walls of that corridor," he goes on reluctantly, "but I am not eager to follow them into that beast's mouth. We should find the others and leave here, quickly, before it pursues us."

Valdis rolled her eyes, "I'm new here, I have zero pull or authority, they have no reason to believe me. For all they know, I could be messing with them."

Which was usually a possibility, but she didn't plan on causing a fuss here.

"Besides, there could be several reasons for the problem. I might be wrong and the Kirin could actually be fine." She watched him closely, "Why are you so upset over this?"

She smile is hold only a tinge of wryness as she follows his glance towards the two rude attendees. Her eyes show a spark of intrigue as well, because she cannot deny that this is a prime opportunity to assess how they handle poor behavior. "Let us see how the officers handle the disruption, then."

Luckily it takes all of a thirty seconds of the Igheeri's conversation to earn the captain's displeasure. Lambasting them for their disrespect of authority, they clearly are not suited to become servants of justice. Within the next few tense seconds where the two Igheeri seem to be caught between protesting and stunned in disbelief, they are quickly and forcefully escorted from the venue. The captain, clearing his throat, continues on to finish the speech, adding that such rudeness will not be tolerated if anyone wishes to join their ranks. When the introductory speech is over for a break before the next, Zelda inclines her head towards her fellow recruit. "Well," she states decidedly, a little tongue-in-cheek. "I suppose we know now that basic decency is expected of the Sentry. That is always a welcome sign of any law enforcement."

[There were such wonderful feelings associated with being the person someone attempted to suck up to. Given how many bigwigs she'd had to work for over the years.]

And you actually listened.

Hn.

Fellas like you are rare breed indeed. I'm almost impressed. Too many youngsters these days are insistent upon ignoring the wisdom of their elders, thinking they can just walk outside and immediately know everything they need to know through sheer osmosis or watching a single news program on the television set.

[And while it may have seemed she was about to go on another rant...her words were slow and calm. She just had a lot to say on this one, specific topic.]

"They might also like to know one of their animals aren't completely well." He couldn't help it, every time 'the kirin' was said, there was a not so small part that wanted to childishly stomp its foot and insist this creature was not a kirin.

... Not that he couldn't act more childish than he already did generally by virtue of apparent age if it might get him something he wanted, but over this? No. So Rokuta grimaced, shaking his head.

"Besides, I don't think you're wrong." He could say 'I know you're not wrong', but randomly telling a person soon after he'd arrived here that he could understand the animals wasn't what he was planning to do. So he met her eyes squarely, a bright glow in his own. "What, it's wrong to care about the welfare of animals, now?"

He just could not stand the idea of anyone... or anything... in pain.

On instinct, the Fool throws up his arms to shield his head and shrinks back from the monster as it lunges, but he hasn't completely obscured the fight--if one could call it that--from view. He watches the blood lance form, watches Klaus hurl it like a spear, and sees the creature hit the ground, blood oozing from both entry and exit wounds.

For a few weighted moments, the Fool remains stock still. Then, slowly lowering his hands, he looks in trepidation to the dead monster, to the one who'd slain it.

"...I suppose I needn't ask whether it's really dead," he begins cautiously.

"I'd prefer to not have to explain why I don't think the animal should race, trust is not something I give lightly, nor do I expect it to be given. I'm a fairly selfish person, self-protection comes before anyone else."

Not entirely true, but better to deter any idea that she actually held any concern about others.

"There's nothing wrong with caring about animals, you are obviously passionate about it. What I don't understand is why?"
