Test Drive Meme #001

KHU IODUAN; TEST DRIVE MEME #001

I. THE VERDANT SENTRY - Attention, New Recruits!
It's clear that all of the city's law enforcement is handled by the various branches of the Sentry: from Mounted Division handling street patrol, to the Aerial Corps provided airborne support for tactical and rescue operations, to the Nautical Branch undertaking regular sea patrols as the first line of defense along the archipelago's borders. But everyone interested in joining up has to go through their basic training program, and that starts today with a general skills assessment. There's quite a mix of attendees today, spread across nearly every race represented in Aifaran and including other Dreamfolk, but whatever the recruiter is saying is getting lost in the two chatty Igheeri who seem to think they're too good to listen to the standard welcome speech... time to interrupt by signaling the person in charge? Take care of it yourself? Gripe about it to the person in line beside you?

II. KIRIN RODEO - Place Your Bets!
At the end of every month, the Mounted Division of the Sentry holds their skills competition. When they're not on the field, their steeds are often the subject of much admiration from children and more than a few adults. Astride many breeds of kirin, some lithe and fleet, some stockier and stronger, these off-duty officers demonstrate their control and bond over the notoriously strong-willed and intelligent creatures with complicated maneuvers. There's a surprisingly in-depth system for betting on one's favourite to win the various matches, and just about everyone's willing to explain the odds to newcomers. There's only one rule: all proceeds go to funding of the city's charities. (Bragging rights on winning are still yours to keep.) Two bells ring loudly over the crowd - last call for wagers!

III. WE HAVE REGULATIONS ABOUT THIS - Munga on the Loose!
Munga are ill-tempered, rat-sized spiky lizards with a gift for camouflage, and whose venom in their spines and teeth is also highly hallucinogenic. And... they're on the loose. Fortunately, keeping them is highly regulated, and pretty much everyone in Aifaran knows about them, but loose Munga are uncommon enough that the reaction is more likely to be startled flailing at a hint of spines and skittering. Today someone's exotic pet has slipped out of their hands, and it's trailing a harness and lead as it zigzags away, prickling and hissing and going for the ankles. It's given a wide berth, except by those who don't notice until it's too late or those too preoccupied by something else. Hopefully the proper authorities have been notified to catch and return the creature, but maybe someone helpful can keep it from getting too far away?

IV. A SURPRISE WINDFALL - Officer, This Isn't Mine...
There was a loud thud as someone tosses a heavy bag from the window of a dilapidated building. Five seconds later there’s smoke pouring out the windows and your holding what seems to be someone else’s luggage. Opening it, you find carefully wrapped bricks of some very illegal drugs, and someone down the side alley is pointing at you and yelling. A mounted Sentry officer is giving you a rather peculiar look as well while he calls in the fire brigade. And among the people fleeing the building, there are five Kin’nal looking at you, wide-eyed, as it suddenly dawns on them that they messed up. Take your new prize and split before reinforcements arrive? Try to explain the mistake? Take note that the building is still on fire?

V. INTO THE UNKNOWN - Watch Your Back Out There
The sea patrol discovered the new irregularity a few days ago, reporting that it looks like a series of tall and jagged stone towers rising up from the ocean. It's incomplete as these planar-shunted locations often are, as if something massive had taken a bite of some mysterious city and then spat it whole into the seas of Konryu. Having been chosen as part of the exploration team, you've been working your way through the complicated labyrinth of stone tunnels and dead ends, searching for what the Opara engineers had enthusiastically described as a potential new power source. "Trace the green glowing power lines," was their (sort of helpful) instruction. However the lean, dark and toothy thing you've just glimpsed should probably be a more pressing concern... warn others? Take it on yourself? Pray it hasn't spotted you?

VI. WILDCARD - Because You're Not The Boss Of Me
Anything else that doesn't fit the above prompts is welcome, just keep it within the game setting please!

"Fascinating." Amos appears quite interested in the rules and regulations involved with the strange creatures and this rather familiar event. "It is, however, unfortunate that we get nothing back for our trouble. Not even a small percentage. It seems a shame. Surely the charities are well funded by private investors, no?"

He holds himself with poise, a fair smile on his face, his tone soft, gaze seemingly inviting more conversation, perhaps a good debate.

VI
Amos sat a bar, testing the local drinks. It always soothed his broken mind, helped him think more calmly. This place, both familiar and different from his world, held so many possibilities, and yet, it didn't hold his one goal. Still, the city's opportunities were too good to pass up and since he was trapped here anyway, "Sir? I'll have another one of...whatever this is."

"I've been told they're toxic," he fills in for her, bending down to retrieve the lead. The munga snaps at Devin's hand, diverting to charge at his feet when it misses, and he straightens quickly to avoid falling prey to the hallucinogenic spikes. The poor lizard ends up not quite dangling at the end of the lead.

"You don't seem to be attired appropriately for this sort of thing," the vampire remarks, ignoring the angry hissing noises the lizard is making. "Nor is it your responsibility. Why the chase?"

Rokuta just stared silently as Valdis spoke, with a flat look that may speak of experience far beyond the apparent thirteen years he looked like, and deciding not to say anything about how people that were upfront about things like that usually weren't being quite honest about how 'selfish' or 'terrible' they were (not that they couldn't be of course). Shrugging, he laced his hands behind his head.

"Need a reason to care for animals? They deserve to not be in pain as much as anyone else, y'know," Rokuta said, then arched an eyebrow, "but a well-cared for and healthy animal can also do more work, if you need an additional reason."

Not that any of these... kirin... were his animals and he wouldn't be getting any work out of them, but if he had to say something more than the most important part, that should do it, right? Also, he wasn't about to say that he felt a weird sense of responsibility since they were kirin, even if they weren't the same as him.

oop that's okay!

[personal profile] darkwingsofkilvas 2018-01-08 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that made him smile. "You're absolutely right. It should be given to someone that'll find it useful. It might take me some time to track down who's the most in need of it, but you can leave all of that to me."

Noting her somewhat precarious perch, Naesala offers his hand to her, his palm upwards. "Now, were you on your way somewhere? I can carry you to your destination, or your home if you'd prefer. I owe you that much after jostling you around."

[ Ah, so he's going with feigning ignorance. That's....not a bad option, considering the contraband literally fell into his lap. True, there's the fire close by to account for, but Hibiki supposes that's why one refers to such ladders as "fire escapes".

Yes, this is quite an entertaining show. So much so that she'll keep one eye on him and one eye on the approaching police, stepping out into the road. It probably wouldn't hurt to cultivate someone talented's acquaintance, and getting them indebted to her would be an excellent start.

Does she have a plan herself, though?

Why would she?

And thus she's just. Standing in the middle of the road. Casual as can be. As a building burns and the police approach. ]

[ It doesn't take any time at all before he reaches a landing high enough to be overlooked and he just drops the bag. If anyone does happen to see it from below it's reasonable to claim that he hadn't seen it. ]

[ That taken care of, he quickly makes his way back down to the ground, landing in a squat. ]
darkwingsofkilvas: (F; how terrible for you)

Oh, I'm sure I was still a handful when I was younger. Now that all my feathers have grown in, I've been able to see first-hand how useful his advice was.

[He might even be missing old Nealuchi. Just a little bit.]

... And considering I haven't seen a 'tell-vision' before, it might have helped. That sounds like magic to me.

...I'm going to just assume that some newfangled slang you kids are all using these days.

[She gave up trying to follow all that years ago.]

Are you really telling me you've never seen a television before? Not even unplugged?

Your parents must have been extremely strict. I'm tempted to approve, if I didn't work for a television studio myself.

The only room that doesn't belong to somebody is the broom closet.

[Minako's bag is very small, but she clutches it as if it's the largest burden to ever exist. Because this pushing-out is completely unacceptable.]

II.

[Charity betting? Hey, it's better than no entertainment at all. Minako listens to the explanation of the system, nodding along...and promptly places her bets on the absolute cutest Kirin she can find. Within minutes, she's hand-drawn a cutesy caricature of her chosen Kirin and started waving it in the air.]

You can do it! Don't let anybody get you down!

V.

[Minako didn't show up for this mission. A mysterious magical warrior calling herself Sailor Venus is here instead, glittering gold in that strange sailor suit. She's fairly quiet on the journey through the caverns, though she murmurs gentle reassurance along the way...but those teeth she just spotted around the bend? Not reassuring. At all.

She presses a hand over her mouth...wait, that's not right. Venus gently shakes her head and turns to the group.]

I'm sure we can get past...but do you want to go back?

[She huffs. Being cute affords many rights and privileges, she knows that best of all, but all of that ends where her aching back begins.]

It's not your concern yet, you mean. Maybe I can switch and find somebody else, but there's not enough space for you to take up two beds!

Slang? Not at all. I do have feathers.

There were other things I didn't recognize when I came here, so I have to assume it's something to do with how our different worlds work.

Eve didn't need that dignity.

She picks herself up and brushes herself off, brisk, businesslike. Now the woman's willing to help, huh. "Could have done that a lot earlier," she says grudgingly, eying the creature.

But it's not her habit to completely disregard help, so a moment after Eve sighs. "Thanks. Do you know what this is? I only got that no one wanted it near them. Except probably the person who lost it."
colonelnope: (what's that)

[personal profile] colonelnope 2018-01-08 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Movement catches Eve's eye first. She looks, then looks closer with a sharp eye.

Tiny person. Not a bird or an insect. Tiny... person.

You know what, fine, it's been that kind of a day. "Uh... hello?" she tries gingerly. When in doubt, see if it's open to talking.
colonelnope: (yes polite good)

[personal profile] colonelnope 2018-01-08 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
11 and 3/4. Well, that was precise. Eve raised an eyebrow over that, then shrugged and finished marking her own betting card. "Since yesterday morning. I'm finding my way around all right, but all this is a little weird even for me."

What was with his hair? ...Maybe she just wasn't going to ask.

"But hey, it's for charity, right?"
colonelnope: (determination!)

[personal profile] colonelnope 2018-01-08 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Eve clears each room as she goes, testing the doors for heat before sticking her head into a room. The smoke is starting to make her eyes water, but she's had worse. Room after room, quick flicks of her gaze around for people shapes.

No one, and no one. "Clear," she calls from the end of the hall, and turns, striding back toward the stairs. X is stalled. "X," Eve says, to get his attention, and, a bit more insistently before she even has seen if he responds or not, "X. Time to go."
colonelnope: (i see you)

[personal profile] colonelnope 2018-01-08 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
"I didn't start this day in a position where toxic escaped lizards were a problem," Eve gripes. At least he's got control of the thing now, even if it sounds angry.

The bit about her responsibility doesn't make much sense. There was a problem; why wouldn't she have acted? "Everyone else was just trying to dodge it. No one was doing anything, so I did. Or-- you did, I guess. Thanks for catching it. How toxic are we talking?"
colonelnope: (right okay)

[personal profile] colonelnope 2018-01-08 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, that's... funny. Kind of.

"You'd assume that," she agrees, "but you wouldn't believe what some people will try to keep for pets. Tigers, scorpions... Nice, friendly things you'd want to pet."

The sarcasm is strong. Sometimes she wonders about her own species. "Need a hand with that?"
cirquedelalune: (scared to lose?)

[personal profile] cirquedelalune 2018-01-08 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Asaka laughs a little at the response, but makes no further remark as she heads over to place down her bet. Box seats or not, something like this seems, to her, better experienced closer than further away.

Her bet is for a kirin that seems unassuming but also appears to have strong endurance and drive from what she's seen watching the last races. Not an obvious contender, so the odds on it would pay a little better, but not a complete underdog either.]

Well, shall we find a good seat? I imagine all the best ones will be taken before long.

You say that like you’re going to keep it.

[Judai is holding food that he almost looks like wants to eat, himself, but after a moment, he hands it over (she looks like an apparent expert, after all).]

It has a leash, doesn’t it? [Which is rhetorical, he can see quite clearly that it does. It doesn’t look like any pet that he’s familiar with, though.]

Before the critter can turn around with the intent to bite, Chase has shot at the leash, not caring (and possibly not noticing) that he's in the middle of a crowd.

[Jafar was initially minding his own business when he hears the people around him talking animatedly to each other about some runaway lizard. It has him interested enough that he decides to investigate himself.

Just in time to see the poor creature speeding through the crowd, causing the crowd to react in a flaily kind of way that has him shaking his head. With nimbleness and grace, he immediately follows after the lizard.

But if he sees someone ahead the lizard is aiming for…]

Watch out!

[It’s entirely tempting to throw out his wires to catch it, but he might end up killing the poor creature. So, hopefully the person who hears him can help out.]

IV

It’s not mine.

[Jafar sounds entirely calm, only a flicker of annoyance seen as the Sentry continues to eye him.

But his eyes soon shift up to the Kin’nal looking down at him, and they narrow almost dangerously. However, his attention is focused on the burning building and he tosses the strange back to the officer.]

Here. [Whether he sounds annoyed or not is a question that’ll remain unanswered as his attention shifts to the burning building and he flags down someone else.]

Do you know how many people are still left in the building?

V.

[He’s practically grown up on the sea, and his instincts are prickling at him, warning of a danger that they cannot see. And he’s learned that anything found at the sea can very well pose a danger on its own.

Jafar keeps his pace with the team he’s on, though his eyes would occasionally flicker whenever a sense of uneasiness dawns on him.

When he notices the strange thing lurking around, he stops and motions others to do the same.]

Careful.
