KHU IODUAN; TEST DRIVE MEME #004

I. THE OPARA CORE - May I Borrow That?
The engineers of the Opara Core facility are always on the lookout for new technology they can adapt into the ever-growing web that provides communications across the archipelago and beyond. Their staff are assembled represent a wide swath of the native races in Konryu whose skills are mechanically-inclined, and of Dreamfolk who've arrived and want to pitch in. Part of their standard operating procedure is to take an interest in tech coming in with the newly arrived Dreamfolk. An excitable female Muin, her bright shock of electrically pink hair and matching, jewel-like eyes alight with a madcap glee, is wheedling for whatever gadget you have on your person. "Please?" she asks for the third time, blinking at you hopefully. "I'll put it back exactly how it was when I'm done. I promise..."

II. KIRIN RODEO - Place Your Bets!
At the end of every month, the Mounted Division of the Sentry holds their skills competition. When they're not on the field, their steeds are often the subject of much admiration from children and more than a few adults. Astride many breeds of kirin, some lithe and fleet, some stockier and stronger, these off-duty officers demonstrate their control and bond over the notoriously strong-willed and intelligent creatures with complicated maneuvers. There's a surprisingly in-depth system for betting on one's favourite to win the various matches, and just about everyone's willing to explain the odds to newcomers. There's only one rule: all proceeds go to funding of the city's charities. (Bragging rights on winning are still yours to keep.) Two bells ring loudly over the crowd - last call for wagers!

III. WE HAVE REGULATIONS ABOUT THIS - Munga on the Loose!
Munga are ill-tempered, rat-sized spiky lizards with a gift for camouflage, and whose venom in their spines and teeth is also highly hallucinogenic. And... they're on the loose. Fortunately, keeping them is highly regulated, and pretty much everyone in Aifaran knows about them, but loose Munga are uncommon enough that the reaction is more likely to be startled flailing at a hint of spines and skittering. Today someone's exotic pet has slipped out of their hands, and it's trailing a harness and lead as it zigzags away, prickling and hissing and going for the ankles. It's given a wide berth, except by those who don't notice until it's too late or those too preoccupied by something else. Hopefully the proper authorities have been notified to catch and return the creature, but maybe someone helpful can keep it from getting too far away?

IV. KNOWLEDGE IS PRECIOUS - Accosted By Monks
The Tariken monks are out in full force today, their orange and green robes making them easy to spot in a crowd, and there's a high chance you might be approached by one. Their sect values knowledge above everything else, so recording information from Dreamfolk, who are transient to Konryu, is something they see as imperative. Some of the questions are standard ("what's the name of your world? is it anything like Konryu? do have have any special position there?") but sometimes they move into stranger territory, like what's your favourite bath soap scent and how many times you wear your socks before washing them -- all of which are asked with the most studious attentiveness, just in case your answer holds the secret to the multiverse.

V. INTO THE UNKNOWN - Watch Your Back Out There
The sea patrol discovered the new irregularity a few days ago, reporting that it looks like a series of tall and jagged stone towers rising up from the ocean. It's incomplete as these planar-shunted locations often are, as if something massive had taken a bite of some mysterious city and then spat it whole into the seas of Konryu. Having been chosen as part of the exploration team, you've been working your way through the complicated labyrinth of stone tunnels and dead ends, searching for what the Opara engineers had enthusiastically described as a potential new power source. "Trace the green glowing power lines," was their (sort of helpful) instruction. However the lean, dark and toothy thing you've just glimpsed should probably be a more pressing concern... warn others? Take it on yourself? Pray it hasn't spotted you?

VI. WILDCARD - Because You're Not The Boss Of Me
Anything else that doesn't fit the above prompts is welcome, just keep it within the game setting please!

[ Loki was right in the middle of a splendid story, about himself, of course, and only a monster would be able to interrupt. One does. In the worst possible way he could conceive of. In the specific way he went into everything wanting to avoid. Someone said Asgard with familiarity, not messing up the pronunciation or asking what it was. Casually, like Asgard's a popular vacation spot and not the home to actual gods. Shit. Loki used all of his willpower not to bolt right then and there, repeating a mental mantra of-- they said Asgard, not Loki, Asgard, not Loki. ]

[ Loki had frozen for about six seconds, six was almost too long, but he turned to look politely at his interrogator and made comfortable, non-suspicious eye contact. This child looks familiar in a way Loki really, really doesn't like, and it agitates him more to not know exactly why yet. He's supposed to be the one with the secrets. ] Hi. Did I say that? Yes, yes I did, alright, that's correct, but I parted with it long ago, so-- I can't give you anything important or informed... [ Loki's a strategist. But he's also petty. ] But everyone knows Thor Odinson! Of course, of course, our most legendary and honorable princelet. He was to rule, but when I was last there, didn't appear to have table manners down, so I do wish him the best of luck. [ The monks were writing this down too. Loki blushed a bit, but giggled. ] No, he's a good man... so good he assumes you can win in every situation by challenging it to a noble brawl... and is too busy striking heroic poses to have time to read... [ Shakes head vigorously. ] I don't know him directly, just of him. He's loud at parties and very loved by all, including me.

excuse u loki he is not a child, he is 21 whole years old and could definitely grow a beard, if he wanted to

"Really? I don't remember seeing you around before." To be fair, there are more Dreamfolk now than there were in Keeliai, and they're more integrated and spread out into the city. It's not that strange for Tony not to recognize one of them.

He grins at Asgard Dude's description of Thor. Tony knows very little about Thor or Asgard, but from what he does know, that's all totally believable. "Yeah? I've never met him, but he shows up on Earth sometimes. I hear he really likes Swedish meatballs."

The crowd has shifted slightly, absorbing the Tony as the gathered scholars take a sudden interest in the newcomer who also claims to be familiar with the magnificent kingdom of Asgard.

"It's cool to run into someone else from our part of the multiverse. What's your name?"

Loki will call anyone he perceives as vaguely younger a small child, can't stop him.

[ Oh, fantastic, someone who'd been around longer than him, too. Loki was ruffled, but he also saw a chance he couldn't miss here. He needed to know if anyone else was going to recognize anything from his past and pester him about it. He beamed brightly to bury that urge to cringe. ] Aren't you friendly, how wonderful to see in today's youth. I've been rather busy up until recently, but here I am, socializing, in the open, breathing fresh air. You can remember seeing me now, and I'll be here often, practicing good citizenship.

[ It's a relief he doesn't end up offended at Loki's jabs towards his disgrace brother. In fact, that kind of validation even soothes Loki. His smile turns looser. It's not often someone doesn't rush to defend Thor-- as if he isn't a beefy intimidating bully that can defend himself. ] Congratulations, I'd recommend keeping it that way unless you find "likes swedish meatballs" to be a deep, engaging personality trait. [ Shrug! ] It's cute to watch him swing oversized hammers around, so feel free to be entertained from a distance.

[ Aw... He wasn't the absolute center of attention anymore. A small sacrifice for information. ] You're right, it's been a while for me, and I've always had an interest in Earth, very eventful place. It's Lyn, pleasure to make your acquaintance. And you are...?

tony is a tiny adorable baby

"Uh, right. Okay." Wow, this guy is a talker. Tony bristles a little at being called a 'youth,' but he lets it slide because the dude is an Asgardian so he's probably, like, a zillion years old. Tony shrugs. "Would have been nice for him to show up with his oversized hammer when we were being invaded by aliens, but I'm sure he had important Asgard stuff to do." It's said without any rancor – he imagines that Thor does have plenty of responsibilities outside of babysitting Midgard. Anyway, they managed fine on their own.

"I'm Tony." His grin returns. "Depending on what version of our universe you're from, you might have heard of me. Tony Stark. Good to meet you."

[ Loki seems somewhat smug at the loss for words, taking tremendous ego points for being the most chatty and annoying person in the area. He needed something to hang on to after losing the spotlight with his fans. Laughs, also without particular maliciousness. ] Probably! No hard feelings. If he's not invested enough or on some kind of team with you already, he might just be thinking "oh, Earth gets surprise alien visits all the time, no biggie." How'd that go, by the way? You aren't here because it went badly, are you? [ Eyes curiously. That'd be fun to hear about. Pleasepleasepleaseplease. ]

[ ...Tony was a common name. Plenty of humans have that name. Loki tilted his head. This kid was too wholesome, not a self-righteous alcoholic who likely wore sunglasses indoors and practiced witty quotes in a mirror. Impossible. Silly, silly him. And then, Loki choked on air when the last name came. ] I-- yes. [ Composes self, but fails, remaining flustered. ] You're a bit of a celebrity where I'm from. Perhaps you still are, but you're certainly smaller, and different. Iron Man junior, surreal... Uh, that's good, though, don't take it as an insult. Life tip-- you're perfect just the way you are! Wow, how old are you? [ Gapes and circles around Tony, examining him like he's at a museum. ]

"Oh, no, we did fine. Blew up the alien mothership, saved the day, didn't get killed. It's cool. We already had one god in the mix, so adding another would have just made things complicated."

'Lyn' is obviously taken aback – flustered, even – when Tony introduces himself, which, Tony has to admit, is quite an ego boost. Wow. He was mostly joking. He's definitely not famous on Asgard in his own world. But in Lyn's universe, he's not just known on Asgard (perhaps vaguely, as someone the crown prince occasionally mentions in tales of his exploits), he's a celebrity? For real?

"Yeah, I've heard most versions of me are older when they start the Iron Man thing. I'm twenty-one, I was eighteen when I came here, but— what did I do in your universe that you guys on Asgard know about me?" He's really curious. Can you blame him?

Hearing of his alternate universe interstellar fame has even put him in a good enough mood that he doesn't mind the way Lyn walks around him, staring like he's a zoo exhibit. Anything for his adoring fans.

[ Loki abhors this... but he's had far worse, and he's still here, damn it. He knows the role almost better than he knows himself. Harmless suck-up. Does wonders for staying under the radar and gaining favor. Gifts, loyalty, protection, information. Currently more valuable than crowing of superiority and choking himself with his pride once again. Too many "agains". He smiles gently. ] You hold yourself well for twenty-one, Tony. Humans are more dignified than Asgardians at this age, I have a high respect for it. And I think if you've started this early, you shall find yourself only making grander impact than your other selves with time. Something to look forward to, and hold your head high for.

You had saved your planet several times, were a figurehead for your heroic causes, and from what I'd heard in passing, had built a powerful business empire. I don't believe the latter was something my people knew of, but as I said, Earth culture interests me. Your own kin knew of all your successes. [ And failures. Loki isn't going to tell him about that unless he had teeth pulled. It was kinder not to, anyway. Look at him, a regular do-gooder. ]

[ Loki stopped in front of Tony again. ] It's an honor. Are there any other heroes like you here? [ Chuckles. ] I'd like to be mentally prepared. Not be too obviously starstruck next time, perhaps! I must seem unbecoming.

Tony beams at the praise. That's, you know, pretty much where he expected his life to go, but it's always nice to meet an admirer. (The only thing that's keeping him from getting an obnoxiously swelled head about it is that praise for being exceptional is the background radiation of his life, and he doesn't really realize that it's unusual.)

"Well, thanks. I've always wanted to use technology to help people, so... I'm glad to be able to do that. Things have started getting pretty crazy on Earth – somebody has to step up." And, well, being universally beloved on two planets is just a nice bonus, isn't it?

"It's just me and two of my friends right now. Pepper's here – she's Rescue." Who Tony assumes you've heard of, because she's awesome. And surely there's no such universe where Pepper and Rhodey aren't by his side through all his adventures, right? That would be a terrible universe.

"The other one... you wouldn't know him." Hopefully... "He's, uh, a friend from school." The less said about Gene's super alter ego, the better. "But our corner of the multiverse sees a lot of action here. Steve Rogers was around for a little while, and a couple other versions of me. This place seems to draw in a lot of... heroes, I guess. It might be something about having a lot of psychic impact in your world, or something like that. Anyway, if you stick around long enough, you'll probably run into people you've heard of." Tony grins. "Maybe Thor will show up."
